DRAM is now more expensive than compute chips on per-area basis — AI demand drives memory die value past leading-edge silicon
Memory prices are at record highs due to demand from the AI sector and are not going to drop any time soon. In fact, prices of DRAM on a per-area basis can be higher than the price of silicon processed using TSMC's N2 and N3 fabrication technologies, which are used to make compute chips, according to an observation made by Kurnal Insights. While the comparison has merit, it has an important caveat.
Raspberry Pi locks boards to factory RAM capacities in firmware — engineer tells DIY modders ‘don’t waste your time’ trying repairs or upgrades, company cites shady reseller scams
Raspberry Pi users are effectively being blocked from swapping the RAM chips on their SBCs for repairs or upgrades. In a reply on the firm’s forums, Raspberry Pi Engineer & Forum Moderator PhilE told users that the company has been “locking devices to their original RAM size” for some time. This decision was made for the sake of device reliability, says the rep. However, the move seems to go against the grain for a company so involved in the maker, DIY, and tinkerer side of computing.
This $299 2TB MSI SSD is one of the least expensive PCIe 4.0 SSDs you can buy right now — just 10 cents per GB yields a speedy upgrade for your internal storage
Component prices have been through the roof for far too long because of the AI apocalypse, with RAM, video cards, and storage among the biggest increases. And while the prices are nowhere near what they were just a scant year and a half ago, we are seeing some deals that are good for the times. For example, Newegg has a great price on the budget-friendly MSI Spatium M461 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD for only $299.99, or 10 cents per GB, after the promo code (SSD73852). This mid-range SSD is one of the least expensive name-brand drives available.
