World of Warcraft: Forever drops the PvP grind so normal people can have fancy titles too
Even though I was way too new (and low level) to understand how PvP worked in World of Warcraft's early days, I knew by osmosis that it was made for tryhards. WoW PvP was not only a massive grind, but a competition against other grinders for a unique title that no normal person would even dare to go for.

“You guys wanna see a dead body?”
On Tuesday I published PC Gamer's first murder investigation, about a dead body found on a golf course in Golden Tee '99. It includes at least one (1) twist and up to two (2) shocking reveals. But I know what you sickos are here for: you just wanna see the dead body. Here I am, golfing my way to it in MAME.

Wait, who’s writing Sebulba?
Wait, who's putting words in Sebulba's mouth? "We'll let y'all know a more precise date once we have all our ducks in a row."

Got myself a Pip-Boy... sorry, I mean a ‘Rad-Lad’
Got myself a Pip-Boy! Sorry, for legal reasons, it's actually a "Rad-Lad." I recently bought my first ever smartwatch (a Garmin Vivoactive) and now my evenings are spent being completely inactive as I sit on the couch downloading cool watch faces and trying them out. This is a really impressive one called the Rad-Lad by MarekSoso that turns your watch into a Pip-Boy, complete with different tabs for time and date, body metrics, weather, and even a world map. You can even complete quests! It's pretty rad. All that's missing is VATS.

Jagex apologises after AI-generated six-fingered character: ‘That’s pretty hard to explain away’
RuneScape developer Jagex descended upon Birmingham (the British one, not the Alabama one) over the weekend with its annual RuneFest. It’s easy to forget, but the first Elder Scrolls game had a rough launch: ‘It was a disaster in a lot of ways’
Given the legacy it created, it's easy to forget The Elder Scrolls wasn't a big deal right out of the gate. The original game in the series, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, wasn't badly received—our reviewer, Andy Butcher, gave it an 87 in his review at the time—but it didn't set the world on fire immediately.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance studio co-founder says a lot of RPGs are ‘still games for teenagers,’ and that he’s ‘tired of all the RPGs where you are this chosen one’
In a recent interview with PC Gamer's Joshua Wolens, Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima traced the inspirations for Kingdom Come: Deliverance back to boredom with the typical RPG—kill the dark lord, romance a companion or two, and so on. Klima added that this formula is still a mite too widespread even now for his tastes, and wondered if gamers haven't outgrown it by now.
Brigador devs: ‘The ’90s PC classics often taught really special things, but not because the story said, Wow, violence is bad!’
Brigador was a great sleeper hit of mech and simmy gaming, and studio Stellar Jockeys recently released its ambitious follow-up, Brigador Killers, into early access. I spoke to lead developers, brother duo Hugh and Jack Monahan, over the summer. They told me about the challenges of adding on-foot gameplay, the importance of not trying to please everyone, as well as why they emulate the "show, don't tell" morality and storytelling of '90s PC classics.
Oh crap Dark Souls turned 15
I somehow missed that Dark Souls turned 15 two weeks ago. Honestly, what do you even say about it that hasn't been said already? I guess that's why I'm relegating this to a quick post on the PC Gamer Hyperfeed™ rather than a 3-hour YouTube video called something like "The Haunting Ambiguity of Dark Souls 1." The game is undeniably hauntingly ambiguous, though, no word of a lie.

Steam’s global top sellers are my Top of the Pops
Steam's global top sellers are my Top of the Pops A new entry for an older game, Cyberpunk 2077 is number 5 thanks to a 70% discount. Who let the dogs out? Popular Total War: Warhammer mod ‘deliberately corrupted’ by its creator to sabotage AI copies

SFO Grimhammer 3, a popular total overhaul mod, isn't currently compatible with Total War: Warhammer 3 version 9.0, but its creators are working hard to get it there.

The Witcher 3’s remaster just brought it to a new all-time concurrent player count peak

The seminal open world RPG's hotly anticipated remaster has finally arrived, and it's pulling people back into the Continent all these years later (now more than ever on Steam, according to SteamDB).

On the subject of teeth, one of these classes is a tank called Rat King, a giant humanoid rodent who started out as a fan concept before becoming part of Deadlock's official roster.

Silent Hill: Townfall’s monsters are terrible at hide-and-seek
Silent Hill: Townfall is a suffocating experience. Monsters around every corner, limited supplies, and a whole lot of puzzles. But that all changed when I got my hands on the shotgun. Now I am the danger and these monsters are really bad at hiding.

You should buy Lorelei and the Laser Eyes
I played 2024's Lorelei and the Laser Eyes earlier this year, and it was a revelation—scratching exactly the kind of post-Blue Prince itch I'd been looking for. You go to a big mansion full of weird stuff, and solve puzzles to uncover an eerie mystery. The vibes are on point, and the puzzles find the exact right balance of difficulty—just enough friction to make you stop and think without tipping over into frustrating moon logic. And it passes the classic puzzle game sniff-test of being worth breaking out the notebook over.

Monitors are still the best deal in gaming

I’ve decided the perfect mouse doesn’t exist, so now I swap between two of them
The odd thing about computer mice—gaming, ergonomic, or otherwise—is how subjective they are. I guess we've all got different hand shapes, finger lengths, and technical needs. I've been hunting for the perfect mouse for my particular hands for years now, and I've refined my selection down to two.
Metal desks nearly destroyed a Valorant tournament
Wireless gaming mice are great and have only gotten better with time. They're so good, in fact, that I would not go for a wired model unless I was really looking for a budget option. And yet it turns out wired mice were the best choice for the Valorant Champions tournament in Shanghai, where custom desks were apparently interfering with the signal.

TIL: The Steam Frame can be used as a pair of night vision goggles
I've yet to get my sticky mitts on the Steam Frame, as our review sample is in high demand. But I've just learned it can be used as a makeshift pair of night vision goggles, as demonstrated by YouTube channel azadovski. And that's just freaking cool.
Micro Center reportedly asking RTX 5090 buyers to declare they won’t export the card
With price gouging and some buyers exporting graphics cards to China, Micro Center is reportedly making customers swear they won't do the same. And with a signed declaration, it's maybe a bit more airtight than a pinky promise.
Imagine being charged $1,700 for a poop you didn’t poop
There are few things that give me the heebie-jeebies more than overflowing toilets, burst pipes, and water damage. Ditto receiving a hefty, unexpected fee. So I wonder, how would it feel to be on the receiving end of both?
Deadlock’s got a scary troll
If you ask me, Deadlock's new update is going great, except for the small fact that last night I got jumpscared while running away from a Drifter because I accidentally slid into this here troll. Take a look at this scary guy. What is he doing here? Will we have to fight him in the future? Will he scare me again? The answer's: hell if I know, I hope not, and yes—yes he will.
The Steam Frame gets a battery bump in the latest SteamOS update

A tiny desktop gaming soundbar for AU$63 is a yes from me
Sound Blaster GS3: was $89.95 now $62.95 A gaming soundbar, you say? Well, it does have RGB. Aside from that, the form factor is purpose-built for a desktop arrangement (if you're a console or TV-centric gamer, you might as well go and look at a normal soundbar). This model fared decently in Ian Eveden's 76 / 100 review.
After a record-breaking September, ‘it’s safe to say Steam’s yearly revenue will blow past $20B for the first time’
The first six months of the year were Steam's biggest, thanks to continued growth in back-catalogue sales as well as blockbuster new releases like Forza Horizon 6 and Resident Evil Requiem. As industry analysts Alinea Analytics report, September was another record breaker based on their estimated figures.
9 new 2026 games on sale in the Steam Autumn Sale

Houses I’d build in a survival game, part 2
Real houses that look like something I'd build in survival game, Part 2. My first house is always a square. But what happens when I acquire too many crafting benches to fit in my square? Time to build a loooooooong square. (Don't call it a rectangle: we're not fancy here.) It's blue because I crafted a buncha dye made from surplus blueberries and you know I'm gonna paint somethin' with it.
There’s something even scarier than Huggy Wuggy in the Playtime toy factory this weekend
It's been a while since I set foot nervously inside the Playtime Co. factory, but last time I was there I was hounded through the halls and air vents by a towering blue plush toy that wanted nothing more than to hug me to death.

Talos Principle 2 is $3
The Talos Principle 2, my favorite puzzle game, is $3 during the Steam Autumn Sale. Croteam's Talos Principle sequel went underappreciated in 2023, which is wild, because this series is like if Aperture Labs dumped its entire warehouse of esoteric gizmos into the player's lap to tackle increasingly weird spatial conundrums. The puzzles are smart, peaceful, approachable, and many. Speaking from experience, it might be the greatest "podcast game" in the world.
One story about my first 30 minutes in this post-apocalyptic robot game led multiple people to buy it
ABOVE: A brief gameplay clip from Radiosol. You can't spend too long in the sunlight. "A journey through a desolate world burned by a planetary cataclysm"I related this experience in PC Gamer's work chat and multiple of us bought Radiosol, called by its developers "a journey through a desolate world burned by a planetary cataclysm," on the spot. It helps that it's only $9 on Steam, and that its jaggy megastructures look exceptionally cool.
‘Open world fatigue’ is one reason indie RPG Entropy is borrowing from the classics: ‘PS1, PS2, GameCube games really never outstayed their welcome’
Indie RPG team Lovely Hellplace is undeniably retro-focused: 2024's Dread Delusion and the early access Entropy are crunchy and polygonal as hell. But that also extends to design. Dread Delusion was like a stripped-down Morrowind, while Entropy is a classico JRPG with some PC gaming DNA spliced in.

‘We needed a potentially infinite resource of party members so that we could then kill them:’ Entropy dev James Wragg explains how you fit permadeath in a party RPG
Entropy is a very cool, very funky RPG you can play in early access right now. It's a turn-based ode to the likes of Final Fantasy 10 or Lost Odyssey, but it's also got some PC flair—lead developer James Wragg cites Fallout 1 and Games Workshop's tabletop Mordheim as major inspirations as well. I asked Wragg about the game's mercenary hiring and ambitious permadeath system in a conversation this past summer.

Myhouse.wad remains very cool
It rules that we still don't know who made myhouse.wad. The surreal, unsettling Doom mod had a sort of ARG-lite element to it: The mod's original creator is said to have died, with Veddge, the uploader, either having expanded on something he left behind—or, more troublingly, having found the haunted map among the original creator's possessions.

What's going on?System Shock 2 is an excellent videogame and all-timer immersive sim. Nightdive's 2025 remaster is exquisite. It's free on the Epic Games Store until October 8. Turns out you can play the original Halo in a browser now
In an act that is both technically impressive and presumably legally dubious, a developer has got a build of the original Halo: Combat Evolved working in a web browser. And no, I didn't play the game instead of writing this article in a timely fashion; why do you ask?
Great news, cowards: The Witcher 3’s most yellow-bellied mod is ready for the remaster
What happenedThe Witcher 3's good (and available early) Griffin armour set is notorious for giving Geralt a 'dadbod' with the silhouette of a jaunty paunch. Some people, weak of heart and deficient of spirit, find that objectionable. The dadbod armour remains in The Witcher 3's recent remaster. Rejoice! A mod to fix it is already remaster-compatible. But you will be judged for using it. By me. Is it morally wrong to slim down Geralt?2026 games: All the upcoming games
I’m here to inform you the wrist rest included with the new Logitech G Pro X2 Rapid is very good and very wobbly
I'm here to inform you the wrist rest included with the new Logitech G Pro X2 Rapid is very good and very wobbly. Watch it wobble below. But more seriously, I enjoy this wrist rest so much that it's relegated my old HyperX one, which I previously swore by, to the floor. The giant and sturdy-but-slightly-wobbly silicon goodness that forms this one from Logitech is the best I've tried. It's hard, which is good ergonomically, but not quite as hard as wood. Perfect. Plus, wobble. Just a shame the keyboard that it comes with costs $230.
PSA: It’s time to update the BIOS on some older Asus motherboards
I'll be honest: BIOS updates give me the willies. Unfortunately, even as such a source of undue anxiety, they are still well worth staying on top of. Case in point, the latest BIOS update from Asus addresses a vulnerability found in motherboards for 8th and 9th Gen Intel chips.
Where to find the Nangan region Treasure Hunt in Forza Horizon 6
This week it's spring in Forza Horizon 6 and there's another challenge to complete. We've got the Nangan Treasure Hunt to track down, and doing it will grant you some season progress. The British Automotive Festival Series is currently underway and there are a couple of season reward cars to grab, namely the Lotus Esprit V8 and Lotus Emira. Finding and smashing this chest will get you a little closer to earning them.
This lovingly ludicrous keyboard is a sad reminder of when Google at large had a sense of humour
Is this a piss take? Okay, this is definitely a piss take. Google Japan has posted a YouTube video showcasing the new Gboard Conveyor Belt Version. What we are talking about here, people, is "a keyboard whose keys are delivered straight to your finger tips." Literally.
The biggest upgrade I’ve made in 2026 is this cushion for my arse, thanks to the memory crisis
In short, I've been sitting on it.
I am here to save us all time by determining which of our most-played videogames would be more efficiently completed if you had a gun
If there's one thing I know about the age of information, it's that none of us have time for anything anymore, nor the attention spans to see them through. If I'm not getting a constant jitterbug hit of dopamine every two seconds from my doomscrolling, am I really awake? Don't answer that. I don't want to think about the answer to that.
Chiptune Mozart is really good
As someone who follows the game music scene closely, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting takes on NES classics. One of the best I've found in the last year has been Chips 'N Cellos, an artist who arranges classical music in the iconic style of Mega Man. The NES sound palette's fuzzy percussion and squeaking melodies are a perfect match for Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Dvorak, it turns out.
AOC jumps on the 1,000 Hz IPS gaming monitor bandwagon but this time with 0.1 ms pixel response
I reviewed the world's first 1,000 Hz monitor just the other day, a refresh rate that would have seemed barely comprehensible a couple of years ago. Now here comes another, this time from AOC. Pretty soon, no doubt, serious esport types won't get out of bed for less than quad-digit refresh rates.

Meta’s Muse mascot makes my skin crawl
I hate the new mascot for Meta's Muse AI assistant. The company unveiled the fluffy creature, as well as the Tamagotchi-esque Muse Charm device it will call home, (plus a VR headset that isn't really a VR headset) during its yearly Meta Connect conference last week.

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG… oh, Final Fantasy 11, that’s new
Final Fantasy 14's free trial is massive—so massive, in fact, that it's become a bit of a copy/pasted meme over the years. The sentence "have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14" is burned into our brains.
I did every expedition in Arc Raiders and all I got was this t-shirt
I quite like it, though. The final expedition skin—at least for now, as Embark works out what it wants to do with the system—is pretty snazzy. It even has a cape. We won't see the new character prestige system until 2027, but even as someone who's taken part in every expedition, I'm glad it's getting some much-needed changes.

Micron CEO keeps repeating himself: memory supply will be worse in 27/28 than it is today
The head honcho of Micron, Sanjay Mehrotra, says that memory may be even harder to come by in the next two years than it is today. Now, a memory company's CEO is gonna say stuff like that during a historically momentous upturn in its business— anything to the contrary would be bad news for its share price—but it is a stark warning for all of us regular consumers still feeling the burn of the memory crisis.

Can someone pinch me, I think I just found a decent gaming laptop deal for under AU$1,900
LOQ 15IRX10: was $2599 now $1879 i7-13650HX | 16GB RAM | 1TB SSD | RTX 5060 This is a rare good deal on an RTX gaming lappy, especially when you look at the competition: it's AU$20 cheaper than what JB Hi-Fi is currently selling it for, but most other retailers don't get within spitting range (or at least, they do only with the 512GB model). This thing will play anything you throw at it, albeit not at high settings if it's very recent. It's a 15 incher with a 1080p panel
TIL what may or may not be the oldest board game in recorded history is also, perhaps inevitably, now a roguelike
Oh!Ware on Steam slaps a little Slay the Spire onto a 5000-year-old game.
$30 extra for early access?
$30 extra just for early access and some cosmetics? I was a little taken aback to notice that the Gears of War: E-Day Premium Edition is $100, and all it gets you on top of the $70 regular edition is five days of early access starting October 1 and some skins (a "Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack" and five seasonal "customization packs"). I suppose this isn't really unusual today, when some games sell $60 skins, but I've gotta wonder who's biting on this kind of thing. It's gonna be on Game Pass in a week!
Henry conquers Kuttenberg
Coming tomorrow, I write about summoning an army (using mods) to conquer Kuttenberg in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. For Wenceslaus!
Bryan from the Resident Evil movie has been modded into Resident Evil 2
Log this under "Mods that I'm glad exist but, just being honest here, I will probably never actually install it": Bryan, the dope from Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie (which is great, btw) has been modded into Resident Evil 2. This is the everyman more games need: not a cop with nerves of steel but a screaming dope who can't hit the broad side of a torso monster with a full clip. Grab it on Nexus Mods.

I want to hang out in Deadlock’s New York so bad, man
Don't mind me: I'm just seething over not being able to actually hang out in Deadlock's occult New York for real. As Elie noted earlier today, Deadlock's latest update made its map even more arresting, fleshing out Valve's accursed big apple with new district stylings and reworked lanes.
Valve says Deadlock is still too unfinished to release publicly, but has hero cosmetics and new game modes in the works
A new development update leaves us with more questions than answers.

Agony! Two life sims I really want to play launched back to back
Nivalis Nights Everyone's been waiting years for this cyberpunk "slice of life" and shop sim and I'm logging my nightly progress as my noodle bar empire begins. I enjoy a good shop sim, especially when there's decorating to do too. Nivalis Nights is moody and neon-drenched and has a deeper shop finances simulation than I was expecting. I may be sinking a lot of hours into this!

Peaches revives her breakthrough hit song for Hellraiser: Revival
Holy [BLEEP], they got [BLEEP]ing Peaches to do [BLEEP] the Pain Away for the Hellraiser game. Most opportunistic promotional crossovers leave me cold (or annoyed) but I have to admit, this one, to borrow the words of PC Gamer hardware writer (and Peaches fan) Jess Kinghorn, is legit a banger. Originally released in 2000, Fuck the Pain Away was Peaches' big hit, and it's been used in numerous movies and TV shows in the years since.

Logitech’s AI-fuelled game clipper picked some of the worst clips it could
Last week in Warsaw I got to see a first glimpse of Logitech's new Replay software, which is currently in beta. It records your game, and then lets you use its deep learning (technically not AI, I know) to figure out the best clips and splice them together for you. It looked pretty neat, from what they showed me, but I've just tried it in Counter-Strike and hoo boy does it have a way to go.

I’ve identified the least probable Goku on Nexus Mods and it only took 5 hours
As I've asserted elsewhere, every game has two lives: The first begins on its launch day; the second when a modder inevitably puts Goku in it. Provided enough time, all games eventually conform to this axiom—sometimes even those that had already hosted a Goku to begin with.

The Pentagon has suffered a major data breach affecting 3 million people, including US troops
After the FBI data breach we reported on last week, in which a hacking group claimed it had stolen data on "all FBI employees", a US defence official has confirmed that the Pentagon also fell victim to a cybersecurity breach. Except this one appears to be much larger, lasted for longer, and is potentially very worrying for many civilian US government employees and serving military personnel alike.
Do inductive clicks really help lower reaction time?
I tested whether the Superstrike’s clicks actually make me react quicker
Which Deadlock hero are you voting for first?
The City Never Sleeps update is here for Deadlock, which means one thing: It's time to get tribalistic about which strange critter will be making it to the Cursed Apple next. Personally, all of my bones are on Baba. I'm obsessed with her design. Making the Baba Yaga's chicken-legged hut a New York park bench? Incredible work.
This $30 gaming mouse proves you don't need 8,000 Hz polling at 65,000 DPI for a good time
As our Reece put it last year, the Glorious Model O Eternal is "Cheap AND cheerful". It looks solid, has decent enough specs, and is comfortable to hold. If you don't have competitive aspirations, it's a solid pick, and a great price too. Key specs: 55 g | 12,000 DPI | 1,000 Hz
No Law might be the open-world Deus Ex that Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t
CD Projekt's sci-fi RPG was close to being my perfect game. But it fell short in one specific area.
You’re hyped for Deadlock’s new heroes and map updates, I’m hyped because of the 800 extra pre-match conversations, we are not the same
I kinda wish Deadlock wasn't a MOBA—not because I don't play MOBAs, you understand. I have a misspent youth of over 2,400 hours in Dota 2 and 340 of the suckers in Deadlock itself. I know ball. Rather, I think Deadlock's universe and characters are so damn charming that I'd love for more people to know about them, and the MOBA genre is kinda unassailable.
I have a reaction time 10x faster than pro gamers. Don’t believe me? The Human Benchmark just told me
I have a reaction time 10x faster than pro gamers. Don't believe me? The Human Benchmark just told me... I've been spending an unreasonable amount of time clicking things as fast as I can, this morning. I'm testing whether the Logitech G Pro X3 Superstrike's inductive clicks really help me react quicker compared to a regular switch click. Anyway, the usual range for reaction time on the Human Benchmark site is 100–300 ms. We might expect pro gamers to get towards 150 or 160 ms. Well I just got 16 ms. So which esports team is gonna pick me up?

An Ace Combat dogfight is the world’s coolest form of physics problem
An Ace Combat dogfight is the world's coolest form of physics problem. It's a math prompt phrased in the form of simulated warplanes: Given the trajectories and velocities of two fighters, whose missiles will make their mark? By paring down the realities of air combat to arcade simplicity, AC makes melodrama out of intuitive arithmetic. There's no time to check your work when you've only got a brief moment of target lock, but there's no finer proof your calculations were right than the off-screen thud of a heatseeker hitting home.

CD Projekt urges Witcher 3 Remastered owners to update their drivers

Live from Nivalis Nights: A nightly photo journal of my cyberpunk noodle bar
September 29, 2026 – 1:34 PMDay 1: MondayWelcome to Ramen Noir, the noodle bar gifted to me by Thaddeus Carminus (along with two tables, four chairs, the employment contract for one cook named Banor, and a 50,000 credit debt) for mysterious reasons. My first act as owner is to place that furniture and start cooking up chicken noodle soup. I only spend about 60 seconds waffling over table placement: Near the main walkway where passerby can ogle the noodles. Wait, maybe I want them over by that railing so customers get a meal with a view!

Discord’s new resource-light ‘Game Mode’ doesn’t mention anything about reducing memory usage
Comms app Discord is a notorious resource hog. So, news that a resource-light "Game Mode" for Discord is in the works is definitely welcome. The catch? Early sightings indicate the new mode will reduce "Discord's CPU and GPU usage while a game is running." Notably, there's no specific mention of reducing the app's memory footprint. Doh!
Shogun 2 Complete Edition is remaking all cinematics in traditional Japanese woodblock style
Today Creative Assembly dropped a video summarising all the tweaks coming with the Shogun 2 remaster. One of the coolest additions for me, was that we're getting updated cinematics in traditional Japanese woodblock style. Don't worry, though, there's also a toggle that lets you revert the cinematics back to the originals, so you can still enjoy your Shinobi fumbling assassinations in the funniest ways possible, if you'd prefer the nostalgic experience.

This neat WoW AddOn lets you jot down notes about kind strangers
WoW: Forever's been a great time so far, partially because the old-school design of it has forced me to actually group up with strangers. But there's just one problem: My working memory is shot from being a very tired millennial, and I can't possibly remember all these names.
Stop trying to make a console war out of which WoW is better, you’re all exhausting

How bad is the Blue team in Wardogs? We scored 1 point. I have never seen a score this low until this moment, and of course it was Blue. I've seen enough to accept that Blue team is cursed, and I think it has more to do with experienced players actively avoiding the color than anything else. Winning isn't really important in Wardogs, so it's not a big deal to get stomped, but this was tough enough beating that I had to take a break with Red and Green for a while.
Former Elder Scrolls writer Kurt Kuhlmann is ’100% convinced’ a load-bearing bit of series lore was inspired by a typo
Speaking on the FRVR Podcast last week, former Bethesda writer and designer Kurt Kuhlmann was asked about the concept of "Dragon Breaks"—time getting all weird on account of magic and stuff—in Elder Scrolls lore. The biggest Dragon Break as far as Elder Scrolls fans are concerned: "The Warp in the West," the series' post-facto determination that every ending of The Elder Scrolls Chapter 2: Daggerfall happened at the same time. On account of magic and stuff, you see.

Just happy The Witcher 3’s back in the news
The Witcher 3 was the game that made me realize my college laptop was not going to cut it anymore. It was such a good game, I didn't terribly mind playing it at 1920x1200, 20-30 fps, but I knew I wanted to do it justice with more horsepower. The summer after my first playthrough, I built a GTX 1080-powered desktop, and I've refused to live a life without a gaming desktop in it ever since.

After 12 years, Dark Souls 2 is finally playable in co-op without interruptions
I've always been content to admire the Dark Souls games from afar, rather than get particularly into them myself, and part of that is probably a crumb of leftover resentment from trying to wrangle the multiplayer features in those early games. Love it or hate it, it's esoteric at the best of times and not terribly consistent. If you've a mind to mod those annoyances out of Dark Souls 2, now's your chance.

Shadow the Hedgehog is supposed to be dead
It's hard to imagine Sonic the Hedgehog without his Jungian counterpart: the gun-toting, swear-uttering Shadow the Hedgehog. Latest Xbox layoffs reportedly devastated Age of Empires developer and canceled its next game

This ambitious Half-Life 2 mod asks: what if Iron Lung had a submarine and an airship?
Like many people, I'm a big fan of quickfire submarine horror adventure Iron Lung. Yet despite receiving rave reviews and spawning a film adaptation by Markiplier, surprisingly few games have picked up its baton of vehicular terror. There are other submarine horror games like Barotrauma, as well as job-based horror games like Klekta and Shift at Midnight. But the former has quite a different vibe, while the latter pair seem more inspired by Lethal Company than David Szymanski's 2022 horror.

Steam stays winning, but why
We do a lot of thinking about digital storefronts here at PCG, and a great struggle is that we don't want to demonstrate too much bias in favor of Steam. But Valve's platform just does it better.
What’s in Steam’s global top sellers this week?
Steam's global top sellers are my Hit Parade. Dropping back 3 places this week is Dota 2, hanging in at number 10 in its 460th week in the charts. Did you know Mr. Brightside by The Killers has held the UK pop charts in a stranglehold for the last 520(!) weeks? A new entry at number 9 for Dressmaker. More than just another shop sim, this is serious seamstress simulation. Fashion hasn't been this much fun since Bowie. Rocketing up 58 places to number 8 is Total War: Warhammer 3, thanks to its latest single, Lords of the End Times.

Skyrim’s main quest is better than most of its sidequests
Opinion: Skyrim's main quest is better than most of its sidequests. There was an intense contrast between how fun Oblivion's Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Daedric Prince sidequests were and how boring its main questline was. Even the Fighter's Guild had some twists. I think that experience must have traumatized a generation of players, because I can't think of any other reason why people say the same thing about Skyrim.

I've found the cure for missing classic electronics with buttons and dials and LEDs and cool stuff like vacuum tubes. It's synthesizers.

I think I have to play this game about running a pizza shop as a front for the mafia because I once lived near a pizza shop that I swear was a front for the mafia. I don’t think current-day Bethesda has another good Dark Brotherhood questline in ’em
I don't think current-day Bethesda has another good Dark Brotherhood questline in 'em. The Dark Brotherhood questline from Oblivion is generally regarded as one of the best—and for good reason. Not only is the story pretty stellar, but "Whodunnit?" is a stand-out in that it's a genuinely impressive spiderweb of potential outcomes. The PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted returns December 3 with 20 of The Council’s most hotly anticipated games
The PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct wasn't even a week ago and it was filled to the brim with news, but we thought you deserved one last announcement so you'd have something to look forward to at the end of the year. The PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted returns December 3.
Arc Raiders is finally giving players the chance to build their home Topside and I’m seriously hyped
Arc Raiders players are gearing up for what is set to be one hell of an update in Frozen Trails. It has already been promised as the answer to a lot of Arc Raiders' current issues, but now we also know it's way bigger than any of us expected it to be, with new weapons, gadgets, and arcs. But I'm less concerned with all of those and more interested in its update to raider outposts.
I am now certain The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time limit should’ve just been a setting, after hearing about Rebel Wolves’ attempts to thread the needle
"We changed the main game, besides the prologue, because we were afraid that people [would] complain too much that it's too restricted."
I surprisingly don’t hate the Logitech Blue Yeti 2’s use of machine learning
Anyone else remember the Blue Yeti? Of course you do—especially if you're as old as me. I went for the Samson C01U back in the day, because I was a little contrarian and wanted to follow in my then-beloved TotalBiscuit's footsteps, but most people went for the Yeti. Logitech acquired Blue back in 2018, and these many years later the company has cooked up a new version, the Yeti 2, and it's chock-full of AI—or rather, machine learning—baked into its actual hardware.
Could the PC Gamer team survive Silent Hill: Townfall?
I've played enough horror games at this point to wonder whether I'd be any good at actually surviving one. While some games are simply out of the question after finishing Silent Hill: Townfall recently I came to the conclusion that yes, given the right circumstances I'd probably make it to the end. But what about the rest of the PC Gamer team? Well I have an answer for that as well.
My first MMO character #6: Jacob Ridley
My first MMO character was... Don L Legs Born: [I was a small child] Game: RuneScape My memories from this time are hazy at best. If this is all bollocks to a seasoned RuneScape player, this is at least what I thought was happening at the time. I was very young, but I think I remember a few things. I got really good at fishing. Like, really good. I was top level or something like that. Fishing and cooking. I used my skills to trade cooked fish with higher level players, and they'd give me good armour.
Tim Cain: ‘Among other things that Steve Jackson Games didn’t like about Fallout was Vault Boy’
It wasn’t just the violence that Fallout’s original partner took issue with.
This chill procgen driving game has a very clever UI feature
Slow Roads is a zen game about driving cars on endless procedurally generated tracks. It is much, much prettier and more enveloping than you'd expect from a game with procgen at its heart. I was surprised: I'd like to write more about it soon. You should definitely try out the demo.
It’s tough to stand out in today’s games industry, but ‘sorta like Helldivers 2 except dog people’ worked on me
Here are some reasons to try the Gravhounds open playtest on Steam: It's free for the next few days and seems well put-together for a playtest of an unreleased early access game It's a co-op wave shooter and those are basically always fun to muck around in with friends, at least for a bit The movement feels good, especially gliding across networks of buildable cables There's a light resource mining and tower defense element that has potential
14 days in Dragon Shelter: A play by play of my first season
I'm trying out the new farm sim with dragon-assisted cooking to see if it could be my next obsession.
Experimental RPG developer Summer Eternal: ‘We’re giving away 5% of our studio to you, the Players’ in order to ‘mend the trust broken in this industry a thousand times over’
Summer Eternal is an RPG studio co-founded by ex-ZA/UM designers Argo Tuulik and Dora Klindžić, as well as developer/organizer Aleksandar Gavrilović (quoted above). Given the former two developers' experience working on a canceled Disco Elysium expansion, it makes sense they'd want to try something radically different for their new studio's financing and governance.
Hooked on the brothers
Spotted in Tokyo: It appears that brothers Mario Mario and Luigi Mario are getting lit at this barbershop I passed in Harajuku. Really puts the Super Mario Bros. Super Show's "hooked on the brothers" in a different light. Do you think anyone from Nintendo's ever stopped by Mr. Brothers for a haircut?
Call of Duty ‘cosmetic toggle’ will cleanse Warzone of its Party City aesthetic
Warzone is trying something newIn Warzone, a "cosmetic toggle" that will disable legacy character skins at a client level
Cool demo alert: be a cyberpunk shopkeeper in Probably Stolen
Just a quick alert to let you know about the excellent demo for Probably Stolen, where you're a cyberpunk shopkeeper who can deal in rat meat, counterfeit cigarettes, and contraband weapons. Check it out on Steam. The sim is due out next month but the demo is surprisingly hefty!
8 strong Elder Scrolls opinions: With over 2,500 combined hours (and not all as stealth archers), we shout at each other about Skyrim, Morrowind, and Oblivion

Thief 2 Remastered should be Thief 2 Gold
Nightdive's Thief remaster is looking like the exact sort of well-judged but deceptively transformative treatment the classic deserves. It is one of my most anticipated games. But I'm already looking ahead. We know Thief Remastered is coming with a Nightdive-developed expansion campaign, The Tarnished Mirror. When the studio inevitably takes on Thief 2: The Metal Age, I have so much hope in my heart for Thief 2 Gold. Based on old Looking Glass Studios documents, this GOTY edition
My first MMO character #5: Fraser Brown
My first MMO character was... Zarwulf, Orc Hunter Born: 2004 Game: World of Warcraft Zarwulf was not my first MMO character, but I'm far too addled to remember anything about playing Ultima Online in 1998, or pretty much anything about my childhood. I do remember a wee bit about what I was doing at university, though, and that was mostly playing World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies and Guild Wars. My buddy Zarwulf had a big sword, an impressive grimace, and probably a pet wolf.
After mainlining 30 hours of 1440p Bloodborne, I know in my heart it belongs on PC
You can force it, but it shouldn't be so unapproachable.
Arc Raiders population stats micropost
37% Friendly co-op players (this player group has grown consistently since launch). 27% Mixed players. 34% Pure PvP players (this player group has remained stable since launch). A breakdown of Arc Raiders' player population straight from Embark itself. The studio shared the figures as part of its announcement of a PvE toggle test coming to the extraction shooter next month. Interestingly, the desire for PvE options is strong even among its bloodthirsty audience.
Achievement hunters: Can you identify the games these milestones are from?
I understand why achievement hunting gives some people the ick, but I love when a game has a good set of milestones encouraging me to try features I would typically avoid, interesting new strategies, or unusual choices. Those are the achievements I'm tempted to chase, which is another way of me asking: please, no more 'do the same XYZ thing 100,000 times' challenges.
Arc Raiders is finally testing a PvE-only mode: ‘We can’t ignore what the data is telling us’
Arc Raiders PvE Test"To make a long story short, we’re going to be running a test with a PvE matchmaking toggle. This is how it will work:
Control Resonant embarrasses me, specifically, with a launch day hotfix negating my main review complaint
Enemy damage sponginess shouldn't be as severe for the rest of you, at least.
PC Gamer’s Hyperfeed beta is live
Mind our dust! And don't let any of it get into your PC's fans. We're temporarily testing a new version of the PC Gamer homepage called the Hyperfeed that you'll see getting lots of updates over at pcgamer.com/hyperfeed. This is a very early, pre-pre-proto-alpha test, a minimum-viable version for early data gathering and experimentation. You'll notice a bug or three as we continue to iterate. Why are we trying something new?
‘We all thought we were bringing extraction to the masses, and we didn’t’
A few illustrative quotes from the "Future of Marathon Part 1" video that Bungie published today. The team (recently reduced by Sony layoffs) were candid in their plans to transform Marathon from purely an extraction shooter to something more Destiny-shaped: Easier onboarding, dedicated PvE options, a wider variety of PvP (Including a team deathmatch mode), and a greater emphasis on story. This upcoming vision for Marathon sounds less hardcore and, ideally, more broad in its appeal.
I love modders
I love modders. Instead of just wishing a game had a new feature, they make their wishes a reality. Modder LM6 decided it'd be nice if Skyrim NPCs who were shopping or studying had some new dynamic "I'm thinking" animations. Now they do.
The Video Game History Foundation is scanning Japanese magazines now
This one's for the Neo Geo freaks. The Video Game History Foundation's free digital archive of game magazines has passed 5,000 issues, a major milestone. More importantly, the archive is now expanding beyond English to support Japanese mags, starting with Neo Geo Freak (1995-2000), which require a unique approach to preserve:
My greatest GTA 5 challenge yet: Random teleports every 50 seconds

I cannot believe this obscure MMO from my childhood is still going 23 years later
Was I always this bad at it, though?
Mars rover project uses Steam Deck for steering

To celebrate Silent Hill: Townfall’s release I ranked all my coworkers based on whether I think they could actually survive the horrors of St Amelia
Survival game buildings, Part 1
Real buildings that look like something I'd build on my first night in a survival game, part 1. Defunct restroom in my local park. I count 8 wall pieces, 4 standard roof pieces, 2 triangle roof pieces, 1 door. I could definitely fit a bed in there.

Discord is not my friend
While it seems unlikely that major web platforms can be discouraged from marching us further into a surveillance dystopia with measures like Discord's age-verification rollout, I wish they'd at least do us the courtesy of dropping the 'I'm just a little guuuy' schtick:
Motion blur or lens flare: which is worse?
Let's pretend we don't already know the outcome of this one.
There are 39* Stardew Valley-shaped farm sims that are still planning to launch in 2026 and I have 234 hours** of gaming time remaining
There are 39* Stardew Valley-shaped farm sims that are still planning to launch in 2026 and I have 234 hours** of gaming time remaining. Someone who is good at time management please help me budget this. My crops are dying. Songs of Glimmerwick 40 hours Dragon Shelter 20 hours Grave Seasons 20 hours Nivalis Nights 500 hours Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea 20 minutes *Steam allows sorting by but not filtering by release date in the upcoming games section, so this was a very manual, fallible count. Also, delays can still happen.
Where to find the Shimanoyama region Treasure Hunt in Forza Horizon 6
This week there's another challenge to complete in Forza Horizon 6. This time we've got the Shimanoyama Treasure Hunt to track down, and doing it will grant you some season progress. The British Automotive Festival Series is currently underway and there are a couple of season reward cars to grab, namely the Vauxhall Astra VXR and Bentley Bentayga. Finding and smashing this chest will get you a little closer to earning them.
My first MMO character #4: Lincoln Carpenter
My first MMO character was... Maldirr, Orc Warrior Born: ~2005 Game: World of Warcraft Technically, my very first MMO characters were in a RuneScape account (that was later hacked during years of inactivity) and a Trandoshan force-sensitive in Star Wars Galaxies, that I only played long enough to realize the New Game Enhancements were bad.
My failed Steam Frame teardown... and iFixit's successful one
I got too nervous to fully take apart my Steam Frame, so boy am I glad iFixit's just shown me how.

The timeless power of Shiv
A message to a videogame boss: Look, Slay the Spire 2's Knight Gang, if you can't handle being stabbed with 19 tiny little knives that are paradoxically big enough to hit you all simultaneously, maybe you don't belong in the NBA
Discord takes a second swing at age verification, but don’t worry, this time it’ll guess how old you are with 90% accuracy
After some heavy controversy and arguments with the internet writ large, Discord is now trying to fulfil legal obligations to roll out age verification systems that snoop on you as little as possible. How so? Well, with an "age estimation model" that tries to figure out how old you are, which I'm sure will put everyone at ease.
WoW: Forever has a secret snake druid form
World of Warcraft: Forever has a lot of clever little surprises in it that players are digging up during the beta, including this one: A hidden druid shapeshift form that activates if you're wearing the five-piece Embrace of the Viper from the Wailing Caverns dungeon. This is, in my estimation, sick as hell, and I'm glad that Blizzard's continuing to sneak hidden mechanics and rule-breaking items into its reimagined Azeroth.
Rogue Trader is coming to an end with miracles, madness and ‘tears of blood’
Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader's three-year run of expansions is drawing to a close this December with Processional of the Damned. Like the previous DLCs, Processional will introduce a new storyline and companion, both integrated into the existing story rather than coming after the end of the campaign. And your new buddy, well, she sounds pretty extra. A bit risky, maybe? Here are some red flags: Cries tears of blood Unstable powers Might be heretical "She will never truly be free from peril and madness" A living weapon

Bethesda says that Obsidian’s ‘creative identity’ will be preserved, just months after multiple projects were cancelled and it was told to make a Fallout game
Listen, you can say what you want about Avowed—I wouldn't even blame you if you didn't like it, or much of what has come out of Obsidian's recent catalogue. There's even a tiny, selfish scrap of my gamer heart that's secretly very glad that Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game, again.
Alienware says it will fix the one problem with its otherwise awesome 39-inch 5K2K OLED
The Alienware AW3926QW is undoubtedly my favourite monitor of the moment, maybe even ever. It has just one problem that prevented me from giving it an unambiguous buy recommendation. And now it seems Alienware is about to fix it.
Meta’s new VR headset isn’t really a headset
Meta has announced a new virtual reality headset, complete with Micro-OLED displays, pancake lenses, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip. Except it's not a new Quest. It's not even much of a headset. It's a pair of glasses. Oddly compact virtual reality glasses. With hand tracking. And AI. Don't forget AI.
My first MMO character #3: Steve Haines
My first MMO character was... Ovidlords, Night-elf Druid Born: ~2006 Game: World of Warcraft After a friend bought me a video game bundle that included Diablo 2 and WoW, I jumped into Diablo and thought the Druid seemed like the coolest thing I’d ever seen. When I made the jump to paying a monthly sub for WoW, I was ecstatic to find I could also roll a shape-shifting Druid, so Ovidlords was born. I was a Druid tank at a time when absolutely no one wanted that.
Micropost: I use my ring finger for right mouse button. Am I okay?
Some say I hold my mouse weird. I rest my middle finger on the scroll wheel, and I solely use it for the scroll wheel. I use my ring finger for the right mouse button. But I don't think it's weird. It's elite. It's finesse. It's elegance. You wouldn't get it.
